Resuming a Love Affair 02/05/2010
I have always loved to read. When I was very young my grandmother used to read to me often with character voices and theatrics. She would tell me that when I learned to read that whole new worlds would be opened up to me. She was right. When I was in middle school, I was a library aide which gave me unlimited access to a wide variety of reading material. I read voraciously. In high school, I regularly got in trouble for reading in class. When I was pregnant and not working, I wore out my library card. Reading has always been such a big part of my life. I have read everything from the Nancy Drew series (and Hardy Boys) to Stephen King, Gone With the Wind, science fiction, Gregg Braden (The Isaiah Effect), Sylvia Brown, The Chronicles of Narnia, Cold Mountain, Karin Slaughter (realistic murder stories), James Patterson, The Great Gatsby and much more. In college, I started out as an education major but switched to english and psychology. As a result, I have had tons of english and literature classes and have written many papers. I love nothing better than being in class listening to and participating in discussions about great works of literature and their authors. Again, whole new worlds opening before me. I can't wait until I can go back and finish my degree! Since I haven't been in college for several years and life has become so busy, I have neglected my love of reading. I try to read my Bible regularly, the newspaper on Sundays and random magazine articles but nothing that challenges my mind (except Scientific American) or my vocabulary. So, I have decided to start reading on a regular basis again and writing about my experiences. I hope that this will encourage others to find time in their busy schedules to resume a love affair with reading. My current project is a comparison between The Scarlet Letter and Madame Bovary. I had read The Scarlet Letter some time ago and just finished Madame bovary. I enjoyed both but recommend reading with a dictionary nearby. Please stop by again soon to see what my conclusions are regarding these great works of literature. I hope that you will share your reading experiences with me as well. The next book on my list is Hinds' Feet on High Places. Join me! CommentsLeave a Reply |
